How much should you work?

I had an interesting conversation with a friend while watching the miserable Penn St. v. U of M football game. She discussed how much we work and that you can't be doing your job well if you are not doing work at home/thinking about work at home. She said that everyone she knows across many fields (non-profits, teaching, engineering, politics, medicine, law) work long hours and put in time from home. We have to be constantly working in order to be successful.

Is that true?

American's work more than any other country. Is that a good thing? How has it affected our productivity? Our economy? Our families? Our health?

Thoughts?

I certainly feel like I am working too much. 10-12 hrs each weekday and 3-5 on the weekends. 50 hrs a week is the minimum.

This is REALLY tough for a guy who was used to staying home with the kids a few days a week and having a flexible sched. to spend some QT with the fam. QT is precious these days for sure.

I try really hard not to even think about work between 5pm and 8am. Sure, I'm not as productive as somebody who spends more time thinking about work away from the office. But I think I'm much happier living this way. I think Americans working so much has really hurt our families the most, which is really sad.

those people may be productive for the first six months to possibly six years, maybe sixteen years if they're lucky, but they are guaranteed to have a breakdown at some point. God created the Sabbath for a reason!

so please take a break and don't think about work. :) there's more to life than the job. i wish more americans understood that. think about what kind of an awesome, loving nation we would be if everyone took a Sabbath seriously each week?...
